A little background
In the eighth grade, I mouthed off to my science teacher, Ron Sellwood, and he snapped back, “So, you think you can teach better than me?” Like an idiot, I said, “Yeah.” A week later, I was in front of the class, fully prepared to teach them how clouds are formed. I ran out of material in 10 minutes.
When I walked into my chemistry class three years later, Mr. Sellwood was sitting at the teacher’s desk. I gulped. But thankfully we hit it off and he would connect me with the sports editor of a local weekly newspaper, for which I wrote features about our high school football and basketball teams. And he would write on my behalf a glowing recommendation to the University of Tennessee—where I would major in journalism.
Though I thought I’d become a sports reporter, I actually spent the next 45 years predominantly covering the work and impact of Christian ministries across the globe. That story’s tied to my testimony of committing my life to Jesus Christ in college and His new career direction for me. I’ve had the privilege of traveling to 62 countries, and there’s nothing like witnessing what God is doing around the world. Though officially retired, I’m editorially volunteering with several Christian organizations. And my wife and I are active at our church in Boone, N.C.
I’m on journey with you, and I trust you’ll be encouraged by my twice monthly blog. My favorite Scripture passage is Jeremiah 9:23-24—“Let no wise man boast of his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast of his might, nor a rich man boast of his riches; but let the one who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises mercy, justice, and righteousness on the earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.” Imagine knowing and understanding the God of the Universe who created you and me! Let’s grow together and be spurred into action.
My Mission
My life goal is to inspire serious-minded believers to know and follow Jesus and to love others as He commands—and to connect them to serve others so they can make an eternal difference in their families, communities, and world.
